Boat or tram? Urban water transportation on the Vltava River
In the future, so-called water trams might also be added to the ferries on the Vltava River.
The new waterway lines with a regular schedule would expand the public transport system in Prague. Unlike the currently operating ferries which cross the banks of the river Vltava, urban water trams will move up and down the river. The city councillors approved an urban waterway lines study that will examine how this project could be accomplished.
“We want to offer new possibilities of moving around the city and water trams can be one of the innovations. The inhabitants of Prague could then expect to make the pleasant decision between taking the tram to go to work and to the cinema, or getting there directly on the river Vltava, all with one public transport card.” Adam Scheinherr, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said. According to him, potential new routes will not replace existing modes of transport, but rather complement city transport and make it more enjoyable. The water trams would become part of the Prague Integrated Transport network.
